Last year we had the good fortune of watching the entire
birth sequence of a female cria (CBL Inner Harmony Lady). Here you
can see her from when the legs first appeared through delivery of the placenta
and being up and around. Muffet, Harmony's mother, began humming,
kicking her belly, and staying alone that morning. This continued
into the afternoon. It was getting later and later, so we moved her
into a smaller pasture near the barn. Muffet did not like this situation
at all, so we returned her to her regular pasture. She promptly went
down to find the tree where she had given birth the 2 previous years and
within 30 minutes her water broke and Harmony's front feet appeared
shortly thereafter. It was a classic and uneventful delivery.
Harmony was making noises as she emerged and got up immediately, nursing
within 15 minutes. The placenta was expelled about an hour later
and was about one foot in diameter, pink, blue, and purple (see last photo
below).
