What do we mean by "working"? More than being family pets, our dog and cats have real jobs here on the farm. Our dog is a livestock guardian dog, a Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog. This breed has been developed over the centuries to be livestock protectors -- which is different from being a herding dog. To compare a Great Pyrenees to a herding dog you will immediately notice two big differences: size and activity level. At 9 months, our puppy (otherwise known as Orion, The Wonder Dog) weighed 120 pounds and was not the least bit fat! Away from his charges, he is quite docile and quiet. He instinctively knows that his job is to protect our farm and its many inhabitants. He militantly patrols the fencelines for any hint of an intruder. New in September 2001 is our Border Collie mix puppy, Joy. Look for updates to her page as we get her trained to help out on the farm.
Our cats are cats! They love to hunt for rodents. They also love to help out in the barn by climbing onto a bale of hay we are trying to move or jumping into the wheelbarrow while we are using it. Never a dull moment with these cats. Sadly, Ebony is gone but Midnight has taken over her duties. He especially likes to ride in the wheelbarrow!
